5/ French sentences - My name is...

Learn French & Chill Podcast - Learn French from Laval!

Salut, moi c’est Thomas. In French, we can say the same thing in so many different ways. That's what I want to help you with. This episode is designed to be repetitive. Play it again and again, and make sure to get really crazy. The transcript is in the description, you might find it super useful if you’re a beginner. So get it and use it.

So how do you say your name in French? If you’ve watched the previous episodes, you already know that French is crazy, and that learning a new language is like seeing through new eyes, a fresh vision. Don’t expect things to be said the exact same way we say them in English. The 3 next sentences mean “My name is …” but let me also tell you what they sound like if we translate them word by word in English.

Moi c’est Thomas.

Literally translated: “Me, it’s Thomas.”

Je m’appelle Thomas.

Word by word translation: “I call myself Thomas”

Mon prénom, c’est Thomas.

“My first name, it’s Thomas”

And after this, you can also add a little “nice to meet you” with:

enchanté(e)

and send the question back to the person who just asked your name:

et toi ?

et vous ?

“Toi” is when you speak to a friend, “vous” is when you speak to someone you don’t know very well or to more than one person.
